The Northwest Bowling Team traveled to Wichita for the Bishop Carroll Baker’s Tournament over the weekend. The ladies team consisting of Janice Queral, Kaiemi Teel, Jessica Prater, Liz Nelson, and freshman Cassie Queral medaled with their 4th place finish out of 26 schools. It was the first time a KC area school medaled at the tournament in 6 years. The boy’s team consisting of Chris Goodman, Branford Harris, Patrick Nachtsheim, Gerald Belloc, and Mitchell Jinks finished 10th overall with a record of 7 and 5 including victories over powerhouse schools such as Goddard and Emporia.
Acapella Choir students-we will be touring as planned on Thursday morning. You will receive information regarding the tour during your 7th hour classes today.

Seniors: The JCCC President’s Scholarship is now available. It will pay the cost of 12-15 hours of tuition plus an additional $500 for books for the 2011-2012 academic school and an application from Mr. Giacalone. This scholarship is due back to Mr. Giacalone by March 10th. All candidates will go through a brief interview to be conducted at SMNW on March 24th. For students don’t delay get an application TODAY!

The theme for this year’s WPA Dance will be THE DARK NIGHT… Start asking your dates, shopping for your dress, and getting your dancing shoes on for the most formal event of your entire high school career. WPA dance will be on Saturday, February 5th from 8-11 p.mn. in the NW cafeteria. Don’t forget to wear appropriate formal attire. For gentlemen that means a tie with a collared shirt and for ladies formal dresses. Keep your shoes on for the entire night and keep the dancing clean. NW has an outside guest policy-you MUST pick up a form in the office if you are bringing a date from another school. Students with unpaid elective fees on December 1st will be called to the office during the month of December to change their schedules to electives that do not require fees for materials. If you are planning to drop an elective with a required fee, make an appointment with your counselor to change your schedule ASAP.

Two SMNW debate teams broke into octafinals at the SM East debate tournament last weekend. Saige Cullen and Peter Campain were seeded 16th, they lost to the number 1 seed, finishing the tournament in 9th place. Amit Bhatla and Camen Sauerbrei were seeded 9th entering octafinals. They too, dropped in octafinals and finished tied for 9th place overall in a division with 68 teams competing. Congratulations and good luck to all the debaters competing this weekend at DeSoto and Bishop Miege.

Attention all students: Fashion Careers will be selling tickets for the Tony Bowls Fashion Show.. Designer for MTV’s Reality TV Show and Miss America Pageants, we are selling them tomorrow in the mall during all three lunches. Tickets are $5. Course fees for second semester electives are due December 1st in the bookkeeping office. Payment can be made by cash, check, or credit card. Students with unpaid elective fees on December 1st will be called to the office during the month of December to change their schedules to electives that do not require fees for materials. The team of Amit Bhatla and Camen Sauerbrei debated eight rounds over two days and finished with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses and 2nd place overall out of 50 teams. We do this to honor those who lost their lives on September 11th, to celebrate Veteran’s Day, and for those who are fighting overseas right this minute. Please help support our troops!

The SM School District ID”S will not get you into the games. Prices for gymnastics are $6.00 for students and $7.00 for adults. Football prices are $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for students.

Hey Cougar Fans! Spirit Club would like to wish the boys and girls cross country teams big cougar congratulations! The girls and boys teams both brought home some hardware after their state performances. The girls placed 3rd and the boys restored the order by bringing home a 1st place finish…this makes 15 first place wins in the past `17 years. The SMNW JV Gymnastics team had a great performance Monday night at the JV Invitational. The team place 2nd overall, beating out 10 other teams. Highlights included Mackenzie Rex 2nd on Floor, Scottie Shelby 2nd on Bars, and Amy Hein 5th on Bars. Other contributors to the team’s success were Lucy Cole-Nieves, Shannon Doughty, and Brittnee Edelmann. Great job girls! Also, don’t forget to wish your Varsity Gymnastics team good luck as they take on the entire Sunflower League at Free State tonight!

Last night, the boys’ soccer team clipped the wings of the Olathe North Eagles with a score of 3-0. Goals were scored by Connor Holman, Jacob Lindenlaub, and Kyle Moore. Eric Zoellner recorded the shutout for the stingy cougar defense. The win secured a 3rd place finish in the Sunflower League for the second year in a row.
Next week, the cougars will open regional play. Get ready to fill the cauldron!

Saturday, the Cross Country Teams ran in the Sunflower League Championships at Rim Rock Farm. The girls’ Varsity Team finished 2nd. The girls’ C-team, girls’ JV team, boys’ C-team, boys’ JV team, and the boys’ Varsity team all finished 1st. The boy’s Varsity team is Sunflower League Championships for the 24th time.

The Girls’ Tennis Team ended their season at the State Tournament in Topeka over the weekend with a 9th place finish. Congratulations to Claire Gordon for winning her 2nd match in singles 9-0 and Mary Slattery for winning 3 out of 5 matches for a 9th place finish in singles. State was much tougher this year than last year. GREAT PLAYING GIRLS!!! Once again SMNW had a large group that came down to support the team. Thank you for coming. For the 2nd year in a row, your girl’s golf team is going to state! The team played great at Regionals on Tuesday. Caela McMillon, Erica Waltman, Ali Alonzo, Kaiemi Teel, Ashley Tate, and Whitney McMillon, placed 3rd as a team. Caela McMillon placed 8th individually and Erica Waltman placed 9th. Congratulations to the Sophomore Volleyball Squad for their 4th place finish in the Sunflower League Tournament this weekend. They defeated Olathe North 25-18 and 25-5 to advance to the final 4. It was a great way to end the season.

Girls golf team finished 2nd in the Olathe South tournament last Thursday. Team members were Calea McMillon, Whitney McMillon, Erica Waltman, Ali Alonzo and Ashley Tate. Calea finished 4th overall. Yesterday they finished 4th and are 4th in League. Calea finished in 8th place with a score of 85. They finish league matches tomorrow and start regionals next Tuesday. Good luck

Sophomore volleyball beat both SM West and SM North in 2 games last night. Team members are Carolina Mach, Macaela Abarka, Jennifer Hanneman, Kathryn Fix, Morgan Mcneace, Carly Benjamin, Cierra Carbajo, Caitlin Beatty and captains Kailee Evatt and Colleen Weigel. We play tomorrow night at 5:30 in our final home matches against Olathe NW, Olathe South and BV North.

The Girls’ Varsity Tennis team placed 2nd in the 12 team Sunflower League Tennis Tournament with 40 points, 5 pts ahead of 3rd place. Lizzy Hansen/Allison Williams for 5th place at #2 doubles. Katie Hansen/ Amy Miller came back from 0-4 to win 10-8 in the 3rd set tiebreaker to take 3rd place at #1 doubles. Our #1 singles’ player Mary Slattery and #2 singles’ Claire Gordon both got 2nd place. Congratulations for your great play and awesome season. No practice today. Next practice is 3:00 on Monday to get ready for Regionals. Regionals will be next Saturday.

The JV Girls Tennis team ended their season yesterday by defeating Maranatha by a score of 14-4. Winning in singles were: Laura Cale, Hope Wooten, Lauren Benjamin, Lauren Severance, Becca Theece, Angela Nichita, Daniele Lollas, Paige Vander Leest, and Bridgette Rigdon. Winning in doubles were: Zoe Ziegenhorn/Amanda Rebori; Lauren Severance/Lauren Benjamin; Trisha Jenkins/Courtney Jenkins; Abby Zimmerman/Brooke Evans; and McKenna Epperson/Lena Dennington! The JV team was very successful this year with a record of 12-2. Congratulations girls!
Nastassia Darby and Jalen Lewis have been named as Outstanding Participants in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. They are among some 3,100 students that scored in the top 3% of more than 160,000 Black Americans who took the 2009 PSAT. Congratulations!

The SMNW Girls Gymnastics team was victorious last night at the Olathe East Hawks Invitational, winning the team competition by 5 tenths of a point. Camry Jones took 1st on floor, 3rd on beam and bars and 6th on vault. Camry also placed 3rd in the all around. Jessica Tingle placed 2nd on vault, 4th on Bars, 7th on beam, and 8th on Floor. Jessica also placed 5th in the all around. Other major contributors were Shannon Martin, Mallory Wilhite, and Grace Gregory. Congratulations girls!

Last night in Lawrence, the boys’ varsity soccer team knocked the wind out of the Chesty Lions by a score of 4-1.
The goals were scored by Galen Gossman, David Fancher, Logan Knisley, and Adam Zoellner. This brings the overall record of the cougars to 4-4and their Sunflower League record to 4-0. On Saturday, the cougars play Washburn Rural, which is a rematch of last year’s semi-final state game. The boys will also be hosting a pancake tailgate for those hungry fans in the cougar cauldron. Come out and watch us play!

The Girls’ Varsity Tennis team won the Lawrence Free State Quad 9-3. Free State was 2nd at 7-5. In doing so, we beat BV Southwest 3-1, SM North 4-0, and tied Free State 2-2. Claire Gordon won all three singles matches. Mary Slattery won 2 singles matches. Lizzie and Katie Hansen won 2 doubles matches and Allison Williams/Claire Ochieng won 2 doubles matches. Our last varsity match is Monday against SM East and it will be senior day.

On a clouded night with lightning dancing in the night breeze, a Viking hoard landed on the shores of SMAC. But the cougars were laying in wait. Alec Kremers struck first, followed by Jacob Lindenlaub, and then Aaron Terrill. In the second half, Alec struck once more. Vikings laid everywhere. When the chaos cleared, the scoreboard read 4-0. Kyle Moore, Eric Zoellner, and Matt Humphrey anchored a stout defense and gave the cougars their third shutout of the season. Thanks again to the fans that continue to fill the Cougar Cauldron! The SMNW Girls Gymnastics team had an awesome performance at the SM North Invitational on Saturday. Camry Jones won beam with a score of 9.3, 2nd on Floor with a 9.025, 5th on Bars with a score of 8.55, and 2nd in the all-around with a season high 35.425. Jessica Tingle also placed 8th on Bars with a score of 8.4. The team placed 2nd overall, beating out ALL 10 other Kansas schools. Last night, The Boys Soccer team avenged last year’s lost to Olathe Northwest by beating the Ravens with a score of 1-0. The lone goal was scored by senior, Kyle Moore off a penalty kick earned by Logan Knisely. A stingy defense helped Eric Zoellner record the cougars’ second league shutout of the season. Thanks to our fans who continue to come out and support the team. Tomorrow night, the cougars continue league play against the Leavenworth Pioneers at SMAC at 7:00. The Freshman Volleyball squad went 1-1 in their tri at Free State yesterday. The squad easily beat SMS in two games with outstanding serving by Abby Born, Sydney Lindenman, and Kelci Scott. In the next match, Free State proved to be a tough opponent, but the girls fought hard with Lauren Smith leading the back row in defense. Anna Thomsen and Jackie Entzminger showed their skills at the net with several kills each and Lindsey Unrein and Taylor Kangethe provided excellent serving which helped keep the team in the game. Shawnee Mission School District and Shawnee Mission Northwest will watch President Obama’s Back to School Speech. The broadcast will be aired in individual NW classrooms on Tuesday, September 14th at 12:00 p.m. Parents, who wish to have their child excused from viewing this speech, please send a written and signed note with your child to deliver to his 6th period teacher. Last night, the Boys Soccer team ambushed the SM North Indians and defeated them by a score of 8-0. Goals were scored by David Fancher, Cody Silva, Connor Holman, Jacob Lindenlaub, Logan Knisely, Adam Zoellner, and Evan Miller. A stingy cougar defense led by Kyle Moore did not allow a single shot on goal for the entire match. Eric Zoellner recorded the first cougar shutout of the season. Great job boys!
